Lavender is an aroma that is seen virtually everywhere. And there is good reason for this, too! Lavender essential oil is my go-to for just about everything. In this post, I’m going to cover exactly why it is my favorite – and why it could end up being yours!
Quick history of lavender.
The lavender plant is a bushy shrub, that takes about 3 years to reach its maturity and can be 2-3 feet tall. It has been used since ancient times, and can be found in writings from the 1st century. It was even thought to be a cure for the plague in the Middle Ages – and I believe that it definitely helped those people wholeheartedly!
Since then, you can find lavender in laundry detergents, perfumes, soaps, even in food! (Lavender scones are absolutely amazing, by the way!) So what are the miraculous benefits of lavender?
Benefits of lavender.
Lavender has probably one of the longest lists of things it can do out of all the essential oils. It is a natural pain reliever, so it helps with headaches, muscle pains, joint pain, sprains, etc. It is also extremely calming and helps those who suffer from anxiety and depression. It has the power to calm the stomach, especially for those who experience an upset stomach along with anxiety or stress. When used during childbirth, lavender can help to reduce pain, as well!
Lavender is also an excellent essential oil to use for your skin. It can heal acne breakouts, sunburn, psoriasis, eczema, and even burns and scrapes! It is also the perfect essential oil to use if you are struggling with insomnia!
My experience with lavender.
Lavender is the first essential oil I ever worked with, who knows how many years ago? It is still my go-to to this day! And here’s why:
-I get migraines during my menstrual cycle, and it really helps me to kick those out
-I don’t always use lavender for acne, but I do find that if I use it for a cystic acne breakout, the cystic acne dissolves within days!
-In the past when I have dealt with bad panic attacks, lavender helps me to slow my heartbeat and relax – it also helps calm my stomach if I have an anxious or stressed belly
-I use it for pain relief and I also once put it on a bee-sting. The spot where the bee stung me was totally gone after a few hours!
-Sometimes I use lavender in meditation to help me relax and open my third eye (it is said that lavender can help bring all the chakras into alignment)
So basically, anytime I feel off, I turn to lavender. Lavender is also anti-viral. If I get a cold, or feel one coming on, I put lavender oil on the soles of my feet with a carrier oil (and eucalyptus or tea tree oil) and then I put slipper socks on and go to bed. I wake up the next morning feeling refreshed – this practice really helps me get over colds faster!
I literally am always suggesting lavender oil to my boyfriend and mom every time they come to me with a problem. Actually, now that I think about it, I recommend lavender to everyone who comes to me with a problem! I really feel it’s the best oil to have in the house at all times, and it is a great oil to start with if you are new to essential oils.
How to use lavender oil.
My favorite brand of essential oils is Aura Cacia. You can find Aura Cacia in health-food stores, and I am even seeing it in the local grocery stores where I live, now. So, that’s totally awesome! I recommend getting an Aura Cacia lavender if you are looking for quality at a good price. I use a Jojoba carrier oil, or even Vitamin E oil when I apply lavender as a topical.
Make sure that you get a carrier oil if you want to put lavender directly on your skin. I just put a few drops of the carrier oil on a cotton pad and then I put 1-2 drops of lavender on that. I then apply it to my face or neck (if I am experiencing a migraine – I use this process to put it on my feet when I have a cold, too.) If I am experiencing anxiety, I do that same process, but apply it to my wrists. I use lavender topically more than anything else.
Another great way to use lavender is by using an essential oil diffuser. If you are using a diffuser, put at least 5 drops of the lavender in it. This will help to get the aroma flowing strong. This would be beneficial if you are struggling with insomnia, stress, depression, anxiety. Also, since it’s anti-viral, using lavender oil this way would help to fight any cold or flu viruses roaming around your home.
Lavender fields forever. See what I did there?
I hope you enjoyed this post about lavender essential oil! As you can tell, I really am super in love with lavender. I’m definitely the biggest lavender advocate I know.
